God of War Laufey Announced for PS5 — Details on Story, Gameplay, and Possible 2027 Release

Sony and Santa Monica Studio have officially announced a new God of War title, God of War Laufey, during a recent State of Play showcase. The game is confirmed for release on the PlayStation 5, though no official release date has been provided.

Development and Release Window

Industry reports from analyst NateTheHate on June 13, 2026, suggested a target release window of the first half of 2027, though the date remains subject to change. This estimate aligns with commentary from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who noted that the absence of a formal release date does not imply a long development timeline.

If released in 2027, the game would launch approximately four and a half years after God of War Ragnarök (November 2022).

Sony and Santa Monica Studio have not officially confirmed this timeline.

Characters and Gameplay

Players will control Faye (also known as Laufey), a character previously featured in God of War Ragnarök. The gameplay centers on aerial combat and magic, with abilities including environmental manipulation such as freezing rivers and reshaping terrain.

The player is assisted by a flying six-legged cat and a talking gelatinous cube named Phranque.

  • Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye.
  • Jack Quaid voices Phranque.
  • Perlina Lau voices Rue, described as sentient ribbons attached to Faye's sword.

Setting and Mythology

The narrative is set in the Everywhen, an afterlife dimension beyond the Norse realms. Unconfirmed industry rumors suggest the game may incorporate Egyptian mythology alongside Norse elements.

Sony has stated that the character Kratos remains an important part of the series, though his role in God of War Laufey has not been detailed.
