Interim Title Fight Erupts in Controversy: Pereira vs. Gane
A planned two-source conflict has merged into a single disputed outcome following the interim UFC heavyweight title fight on June 14, 2026, in Washington, D.C. Alex Pereira lost to Ciryl Gane by second-round TKO. Pereira contends that referee Herb Dean failed to intervene on illegal strikes, while Dean stated his interpretation of the rules found the blows legal.
The Fight and Its Context
The bout occurred at an event alternately reported as UFC White House and UFC Freedom 250. Pereira was attempting to become the first UFC fighter to win titles in three weight classes, having previously held belts at middleweight and light heavyweight. The fight was for an interim title, as undisputed heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall was recovering from an eye injury.
Pereira had previously stated that moving to heavyweight felt "natural" after adjusting his weight from as high as 258 pounds to approximately 242 pounds. He noted that cutting weight to 205 pounds for light heavyweight had become taxing.
The Controversy Over Strikes
Gane dropped Pereira with a legal jab early in the second round. Pereira then seized Gane's legs. Following this, Gane landed a series of ground strikes before finishing the fight on the feet.
Pereira alleges that several of Gane's punches and elbows struck the back of his head, which is illegal under the Unified Rules of MMA. The rules prohibit strikes to the area defined as starting at the crown and running down the centerline, with a one-inch variance on each side covering the spine (the occipital junction). Pereira posted images on social media showing swelling on the back of his head, which he attributes to those strikes.
Statements from Pereira
Pereira stated that he raised concerns about potential fouls with referee Herb Dean before the fight, referencing Gane's history of eye pokes and illegal shots in previous bouts.
"If you watch the footage, multiple shots there, multiple elbows. ... Sure, the jab, but given everything that happened, illegal."
Pereira said: "A punch to the back of the head -- you're right there, man. You have to be seeing it."
Pereira said: "He is not a man. He shouldn't have been refereeing that fight."
Pereira called for Dean to face disciplinary action, stating, "A guy like that should be punished." He also stated he does not want Dean to referee his fights again. Pereira reported that he discussed the matter with his manager and intends to appeal the loss.
Referee's Defense
Herb Dean responded to the controversy via Instagram on June 16, 2026, explaining his interpretation of the relevant rule.
- Dean stated that the rule prohibits strikes to the nape of the neck (occipital junction), defined as a line with approximately one inch of variance to either side covering the spine.
- He stated that punches to the sides and the back of the head (outside that zone) are legal blows.
- Dean asserted that in his judgment, Gane's strikes did not land on the prohibited area.
Pereira expressed that Dean's video explanation did not change his view that he was wronged.
Outcomes and Background
With the loss, Pereira is removed from contention for a fight with undisputed heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, who is recovering from eye injuries.
Gane's past fights include a no-contest at UFC 321 due to an eye poke on Tom Aspinall, and a bout where Junior dos Santos accused him of illegal elbows. Pereira did not express regret about moving up to heavyweight, stating his career has been built on taking risks.
