Melbourne Man Surrenders After Armed Standoff in Spotswood

No injuries were reported following a five-hour police operation at a home on Hudsons Road.

A man surrendered to police on Friday morning following a standoff at a residence just 10 kilometres west of Melbourne's CBD. The incident began around 8:00 AM after police received reports of an armed individual inside the property.

Timeline of Events

  • Approximately 8:00 AM: Police arrived at the Hudsons Road property following reports of an armed man inside.
  • Between 8:00 AM and 10:20 AM: Negotiations occurred between police and the man.
  • Approximately 10:20 AM: The man exited the property and surrendered to officers from the Special Operations Group (SOG).

Police Response and Arrest

The Special Operations Group, Australian Border Force, and the police dog squad attended the scene, while an armoured vehicle was also deployed.

According to witness accounts, police used a megaphone to instruct the man to "walk out" and "put your hands in the air." Resident Daniel Livingstone, who was moving house nearby, stated that police operated with caution due to the belief that the man was armed.

Witnesses reported that the man did not resist when he exited. He was detained on the pavement, zip-tied, and taken to a police vehicle. The man reportedly requested to speak to a solicitor upon his arrest.

A police spokesperson stated: "The area is now being cleared and there is no ongoing risk to the community."

Neighbour Accounts

Livingstone stated that a similar police operation occurred at the same property approximately one year ago. He also reported that a nearby business was bombed within the past week.

Other neighbours reported that the property had been searched by police within the past 12 months. Residents also noted recent upgrades to security cameras and lights at the house, as well as frequent late-night activity at the corner property.

Police Statements

Victoria Police has not released further details. The investigation remains ongoing.
