Anthropic Proposes Global AI Development Slowdown to Mitigate Risks of Advanced Systems

Anthropic Proposes Global Pause on AI Development

Anthropic, an AI company, has proposed a global slowdown or temporary pause in AI development to allow societal structures and alignment research to keep pace with technological advances. The company argues that AI systems capable of developing their own successors could emerge sooner than many institutions are prepared for, bringing benefits in science and healthcare but also risks of human loss of control.

The proposal is based on findings from the Anthropic Institute, a research division established in March. The institute will conduct research on necessary mechanisms for a credible slowdown or pause, such as verification that all leading labs in multiple countries have agreed to stop development under the same conditions. Anthropic cites nuclear-weapons treaties as an example, acknowledging those agreements took decades to establish.

Critics suggest Anthropic's warnings may be a marketing ploy to position itself favorably or hype its products, pointing to the limited release of its cybersecurity AI model Mythos as an example. Anthropic stated it released Mythos to a select group of partners due to potential misuse of its vulnerability-identification capabilities.

Anthropic plans to hold discussions with policymakers, researchers, and other AI companies in the coming months and will publish the results.
