A long-dormant chapter of survival horror returns. Capcom has officially announced a remake of the 2000 classic Resident Evil: Code Veronica.
Announcement Details
The reveal came during the Summer Game Fest presentation on June 6, 2025. The announcement trailer confirmed a 2027 release window, though it did not provide a specific release date, target platforms, or any gameplay footage.
The trailer opens in a ransacked Paris apartment, where an older European woman guides a character later identified as Claire Redfield. The footage then transitions into classic horror imagery, setting the tone for what Capcom describes as a "reimagining" of the original game for a new audience.
Game Synopsis
The original Resident Evil: Code Veronica takes place three months after the events of Resident Evil 2 (1998) and concurrently with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999).
- The Story Begins: Claire Redfield infiltrates an Umbrella facility in search of her brother, Chris. She is captured and sent to a prison island in the Southern Ocean.
- Key Plot Points: Claire uncovers the origins of the Umbrella Corporation and the deadly T-Virus Veronica.
- A Mid-Game Shift: Halfway through, players switch to Chris Redfield, who travels to Antarctica after learning of his sister's capture.
- The Antagonists: The Redfields face the twin antagonists Alexia and Alfred Ashford, the grandchildren of Umbrella co-founder Sir Edward Ashford.
Release and Platform Expectations
No platforms were announced for the remake. However, based on Capcom’s previous patterns for Resident Evil remakes, potential platforms include:
- PC
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X/S
- Nintendo Switch 2 (speculated)
Industry observers predict a launch window of February or March 2027.
Context within the Franchise
Resident Evil: Code Veronica is canon to the Resident Evil series but is not considered a mainline numbered entry. This remake is the latest project following Resident Evil Requiem, which was released in February 2025 and featured new character Grace Ashcroft alongside returning character Leon S. Kennedy.
