Short Film 'Maŋutji' Premieres at Sydney Film Festival, Depicting Romance in Yirrkala

The short film Maŋutji (Catching Eyes) premiered at the Sydney Film Festival. Written and directed by Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs, the film is set in the community of Yirrkala in northeast Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.

Plot and Themes

A romantic comedy follows two football players whose emerging relationship becomes a focus of observation by their community. The narrative is guided by Yolŋu kinship rules, known as Gurrutu, and explores the dynamics of public perception and romantic commitment.

Cast, Language, and Production

The film stars Cindy Rostron and Denzel Marika. This role marks Marika's first acting performance. The film is performed in Yolŋu-Matha.

Maŋutji includes an homage to a scene from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. Producer Libby Collins stated that the production took place in Yirrkala, using real community locations.

Festival and Funding Context

Maŋutji is one of five First Nations short films featured in the festival's Proper Loved Up collection. The collection was supported by a grant of $152,000 from Screen Australia, NITV, the ABC, and other agencies. The film is nominated in the categories of Best Live Action Short and Best First Nations Film at the festival.
