Senehase Kedella Elders’ Home Fire: Death Toll Rises to 12
The death toll from a fire at the Senehase Kedella Elders’ Home in Batagoda has risen to 12 as of Thursday morning, following the recovery of additional charred remains during forensic examinations. Six others sustained serious injuries and are being treated at Horana Base Hospital.
72 residents were inside the facility at the time of the blaze.
Police reported that ten died inside the building, seven were injured and hospitalized, and 51 were rescued and relocated. Survivors were initially housed at Batagoda Junior School before being transferred, with Army assistance, to another branch of the same care network in Galpatha.
Allegations of Chaining
Eyewitnesses who were among the first responders alleged that several residents had been chained inside rooms when the fire broke out, hindering rescue efforts and resulting in deaths while restrained. Authorities have not verified these claims.
Police spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler stated that there were rumors to that effect but that police could not verify them until a Government Analyst report is received.
Arrest and Remand
The director of the facility was arrested and produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court, where he was remanded until June 11.
Financial Allegations
Separately, allegations emerged that residents were required to pay an admission fee of Rs. 75,000 and a monthly charge of Rs. 35,000. Police have not commented on these claims.
Investigation
A magisterial inquiry was conducted on Thursday morning by Horana Magistrate Lakmini Vidanagamage. Forensic experts are examining the scene to determine the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined. Anguruwatota Police are conducting the investigation.
