Since 2023, photojournalist Akash Pamarthy has been documenting the Sikh community in Ohio. The Sikh faith originated in the Punjab region of northwest India in the 15th century. Pamarthy documented the community's traditions and the blending of faith with American identity.
Background
Sikhism is a community-oriented faith grounded in equality, resilience, and service. The community's history includes displacement during the partition of India in 1947, economic distress, and violence in 1984 following Operation Blue Star. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Sikhs in the United States faced misidentification and discrimination due to their turbans.
Current Climate
According to Pamarthy, the current political climate in the United States has created unease among Sikhs, who are law-abiding and contribute positively to society but face underlying fear and uncertainty.
Personal Connection
Pamarthy lived with 82-year-old Jagbir Singh Dhillon during the project. Dhillon taught him practical skills and lessons about patience, kindness, and purpose.
Photographer's Reflection
Pamarthy stated that he does not give up easily and pursues his passions with persistence.
