Wayfinder Winery to Open Fully Off-Grid Sustainable Facility in Wilyabrup
Wayfinder winery is scheduled to open its new sustainable facility in Wilyabrup, Western Australia, on August 3. The purpose-built winery is fully off-grid, incorporating solar panels, battery storage, rainwater harvesting, composting, and a CO₂ capture system.
The facility includes a cellar door and farm-to-table restaurant designed by Kerry Hill Architects. Brendan Pratt, former Culinary Director of Parker Group and Head Chef of Vasse Felix, will lead the kitchen.
Background & Certifications
Wayfinder was founded in 2018 and achieved organic certification in 2022. It is one of four Margaret River vineyards in the EcoVineyards program.
The winery's market garden has been expanded to one acre. It supplies the existing Wayfinder wine bar in Dunsborough and other local venues.
Design & Sustainability Features
The building is partially underground to use natural insulation. Gravity is used to move grape juice into 12 below-ground tanks.
The exterior features a rammed earth wall and a rooftop with endemic grasses and shrubs. Interior materials include sustainably-sourced timber and Australian marble.
