A Rare Glimpse: Great White Shark Spotted in the Mediterranean
In May, volunteer diver Derk Remmers filmed a rare encounter with a Great White shark in the Mediterranean Sea, between Tunisia and Sicily.
Working for the NGO Healthy Seas, Remmers found himself face-to-face with an adult male shark many miles offshore. His fingers were trembling as he tried to operate the camera, a testament to the sheer size and proximity of the animal.
A Species on the Brink
Overfishing has pushed the Great White shark to near extinction in the Mediterranean. Conservationists expressed hope that this sighting will serve as a powerful reminder of what stands to be lost—and what can still be saved.
“The sighting may encourage governments to create marine protected areas in the region,” conservationists noted.
The divers were originally filming to highlight the problem of 'ghost fishing nets' as part of their ongoing work for Healthy Seas. The unexpected appearance of the shark underscored the fragile state of one of the ocean's most iconic predators.
