Arrest Turns Critical in Rural South Australia

A 44-year-old man became unresponsive during an arrest in Clare, South Australia, prompting a major investigation.

Incident Details

On Sunday, before 12:30pm, police responded to a disturbance on Opie Street in Clare, South Australia. A 44-year-old man from Ward Belt, east of Gawler, was armed with a metal pole and causing damage to property.

Two officers were threatened by the man. Police deployed a taser, but it was ineffective. During the subsequent arrest, the man became unresponsive. Officers administered first aid; ambulance personnel later arrived.

Investigation and Oversight

Major Crime and Ethical and Professional Standards detectives are investigating. A Police Commissioner's Inquiry has been initiated, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Police Minister Michael Brown stated the investigation will have oversight from the Office of Public Integrity and ICAC. He expressed confidence that the investigation will be thorough.

Opposition police spokesman Jack Batty described any death in custody as an absolute tragedy and called for transparency.
