Naveed Akram, identified as a suspect in Sunday's mass shooting at Bondi Beach, Sydney, has been formally charged with 59 offenses. These include 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. Additional charges encompass 40 counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, along with one charge related to the public display of a prohibited terrorist organization symbol.

The attack resulted in 15 fatalities and multiple injuries among attendees at an event celebrating the first night of Hanukkah, which targeted Australia's Jewish community. The other individual involved, Sajid Akram (50), was killed during an exchange of gunfire with police at the scene.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
Naveed Akram sustained critical injuries during the incident and had his initial hearing from his hospital bedside. The case has been adjourned until April 2026 by the New South Wales court. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated that authorities were awaiting for Akram's medication to subside before formally questioning him, emphasizing the need for him to understand the proceedings. Twenty individuals injured in the attack remain hospitalized across Sydney, with one patient in critical condition.
Terrorist Designation and Motivation
Police have officially designated the incident as a terrorist act. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese indicated that the attack appears to have been motivated by ideology associated with the Islamic State group. Investigators reported the discovery of "homemade" Islamic State group flags and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) within the vehicle utilized by the perpetrators.
