"We're giving parents powerful, easy-to-use tools to help manage what kids can see, who they can talk to, and when they have access."

Apple Announces Major Overhaul of Screen Time Parental Controls at WWDC 2026
At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2026, Apple announced a comprehensive overhaul of its Screen Time parental control features. The updates, scheduled for release in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 in fall 2026, are designed to provide caregivers with more detailed oversight of children's device usage.
Communication and Content Restrictions
The updated system allows parents to manage who a child can communicate with via Messages, which apps they can access, and which websites they can visit. New tools block inappropriate texts, including media containing gore or violence, and control contact additions. A feature to block nudity in messages was previously available.
Apple provides application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party developers to implement similar protections against nudity and violent content, require parental approval for new contacts, and verify a child's age.
App and Web Browsing Controls
Parents can grant access to specific apps and websites and approve additional content over time. The "Ask to Browse" feature, which operates within Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, is enabled by default for children under 13.
Age-Based Account Setup
When creating a child's account, Apple tailors default settings by age, blocking adult websites, restricting media, and setting limits on the App Store. Parents can adjust these default configurations to better suit their family's needs.
Screen Time Recommendations
The redesigned Screen Time feature provides suggested time allowances based on app categories, including Entertainment, Games, and Social Media. Apple stated that these recommendations were developed in consultation with the American Academy of Pediatrics and other experts and serve as a starting point for parents that can be adjusted.
According to Apple, experts have advised that children under 13 should not have access to social media apps; the system recommends that social media be turned off for this age group.
