Apple Unveils AI-Powered Safari & Passwords Overhaul at WWDC 2026
At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 keynote, Apple unveiled a series of updates for its Safari web browser and Passwords application. The announced features, powered by Apple Intelligence, focus on automated tab management, website monitoring, custom extension creation, and automated password security. According to Apple, these updates—which are expected to launch with macOS 27 and iOS 27 later this year—operate with a stated commitment to user privacy, with personal data reportedly not being used to train AI systems.
Safari Tab Management
Safari will integrate Apple Intelligence to automatically organize open browser tabs. According to Apple, the system will sort tabs into topics and automatically assign new tabs to the appropriate group. The company stated that browsing data will remain private and will not be used for AI training.
'Notify Me' Feature
A new feature called 'Notify Me' will allow users to monitor specific webpages for changes. Users can define conditions—using natural language—for the type of update to track and the frequency of checks. Notifications will be sent when a specified condition, such as a product returning to stock or event registration opening, is met.
Safari Extensions
Apple indicated that users will be able to describe and create custom Safari extensions using natural language prompts. An example provided during the keynote involved creating an extension to save recipes.
Passwords App Integration and Security
The Passwords app will be updated to flag compromised account passwords. Apple Intelligence will then be able to automatically open the relevant websites and reset the passwords in the background.
Apple elaborated that a new feature, available in iOS 27, will use artificial intelligence to "agentically" secure accounts by automatically updating weak or compromised passwords without user intervention.
Apple stated that this feature relies on the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, developed in collaboration with Google using Gemini models. The company added that these models run on-device or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers, and that personal data is not stored or accessible to Apple or others.
Availability
The new Safari and Passwords features are expected to launch later this year with macOS 27 and iOS 27. A beta version is currently available through the Apple Developer Program. Apple did not provide extensive details during the keynote regarding the timing of specific feature rollouts.
