Bowen Yang Opens Up About His Reduced Role on SNL Season 51
"I was not central to it."
Bowen Yang, a staple cast member of Saturday Night Live, recently used a Variety interview with Rachel Sennott to clarify why he was absent for the second half of season 51.
A Deliberate Departure
Yang stated he had been resolute about leaving before the season began, feeling that the show was in a good place without him. He admitted he did not see himself as a core component of the ensemble, noting, "I was not central to it."
He elaborated on his specific role, saying he never played archetypes like "the dad or straight-man teacher" but was instead used as "the seasoning."
A Disagreement on Centrality
Sennott pushed back on Yang’s self-assessment. She pointed to his four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series as proof of his importance to the show's success.
Lorne Michaels’ Persuasion
Yang credited executive producer Lorne Michaels for convincing him to return for the first half of the season.
Michaels called Yang at the U.S. Open and told him that many cast members had left and new people had been hired. He argued it would be important for Yang to set an example for them.
Yang agreed to return for half the season specifically to help shepherd the new cast through the transition.
