Mercedes-Benz Stadium, officially known during the tournament as Atlanta Stadium, is undergoing extensive modifications to host eight matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Grass and Pitch Renovations
To meet FIFA requirements, the stadium has replaced its artificial turf with a natural grass pitch. The sub-surface has been completely renovated with a new irrigation and aeration system, and a hybrid grass (natural and synthetic) has been installed. The grass was grown in Colorado to adapt to the climate-controlled environment and reduced sunlight inside the domed stadium. A previous temporary grass pitch used during the 2024 Copa América received criticism for its poor quality, but officials state improvements have been made.
Naming and Sponsorship Changes
During the tournament, the stadium will be renamed "Atlanta Stadium" because its naming rights sponsor, Mercedes-Benz, conflicts with FIFA's partnership with Hyundai/Kia. Over 1,000 logos that conflict with FIFA sponsors must be covered or removed. However, Coca-Cola branding may remain as it does not conflict with FIFA partners. Chick-fil-A concessions will not operate due to FIFA's partnership with McDonald's.
Logistics and Infrastructure
- Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the busiest in the world, is just 20 minutes from the stadium.
- The venue is accessible via two MARTA subway stations and is within walking distance of downtown hotels.
- The stadium's retractable roof can be closed to control climate, mitigating summer heat and storms. Cooling breaks during matches will still occur per FIFA policy.
Operational Background
The stadium hosts multiple events year-round, including NFL, MLS, college football, concerts, and private events. It will also host an NWSL team starting in 2028. The stadium's design includes retractable seating to widen the field for soccer matches. The World Cup pitch measures 105 by 68 meters (20 yards wider and 5 yards shorter than an NFL field).
Matches Scheduled
Eight matches will be held at the stadium:
- Five group stage matches (including two featuring Spain and one featuring Morocco)
- One round of 32 match
- One round of 16 match
- One semifinal
