Olivia Rodrigo's Third Album Chronicles a Breakup in Two Acts

Olivia Rodrigo has released her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. The album became available on Friday and features a guest appearance by Robert Smith of the Cure on the track "What's Wrong With Me," marking the first featured artist on any Rodrigo album.

"The first half of the album was written first and initially conceived as a love story."

Album Development and Structure

The album chronologically details the disintegration of Rodrigo's first serious relationship. According to Rodrigo, the first half of the album was written first and initially conceived as a love story. Following a publicized breakup, breakup songs were added later, and some love songs were edited to be "more honest and more sad and creepy."

The first half of the album depicts obsessive love, while the second half focuses on the relationship's decline.

Musical Style

The album represents a stylistic shift from the grungy pop punk of Rodrigo's previous album Guts to a softer sound influenced by 1980s pop and New Wave. The album also incorporates elements of Taylor Swift's musical style, though to a lesser extent.

Robert Smith Collaboration

Rodrigo has previously cited the Cure as an influence, referencing the band in lyrics and on social media. Smith performed with Rodrigo at the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona. The song "What's Wrong With Me" was originally written about intense longing but was later adjusted to reflect relationship disillusionment.

The album has a runtime of 51 minutes, compared to Rodrigo's previous albums Sour (35 minutes) and Guts (39 minutes).
