The Only Three Products Your Skin Care Routine Needs

A gentle cleanser, a moisturizer, and sunscreen are the only essentials, according to dermatologists and researchers.

Dermatologists, researchers, and cosmetic chemists interviewed by NPR state that a basic skin care routine requires only three essential products: a gentle cleanser, a suitable moisturizer, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Additional products are considered optional.

The Essential Trio

"Products beyond the essentials are 'nice-to-haves.'" — Dr. Saranya Wyles

Gentle Cleanser
Removes dirt, sweat, makeup, and pollutants.

  • Should be mild, fragrance-free, and contain hydrating ingredients.
  • Washing at night is recommended; morning rinsing with water may suffice.
  • Cleansers have limited effect due to brief skin contact. — Dr. Amy Wechsler

Moisturizer
Hydrates and locks in moisture, supporting skin barrier function.

  • Should be selected based on skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive).
  • May include beneficial ingredients like antioxidants or retinols.
  • Moisturizers combine humectants, emollients, and occlusives. — Cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos
  • Apply moisturizer before sunscreen (thinnest to thickest). — Dr. Michelle Henry

Sunscreen
Broad-spectrum protection against UVB and UVA rays, minimum SPF 30.

  • Reapplication every two hours is advised when outdoors.
  • Sunscreen use should be a routine habit. — Dr. Fayne Frey

Sunscreen Considerations

Foreign sunscreens (Europe, Japan, South Korea) may offer better UVA protection due to different approved filters like iscotrizinol.

The FDA recently added bemotrizinol to permitted ingredients in the US. For reliable UVA coverage, physical sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are recommended.
