Mamdani vs. Musk: A Trillion-Dollar Clash Over Taxing the Rich
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has once again turned his focus to the world's richest man, using Elon Musk's historic financial milestone to reignite the debate on wealth taxation.
Following SpaceX stock opening at $150 per share on Friday—up from its initial offering price of $135—Musk’s net worth surged past $1 trillion, making him the first person in history to reach that figure.
"Reason #1,000,000,000,000 why we should tax the rich."
Mayor Mamdani posted on X, referencing the trillion-dollar figure directly. Musk, already the wealthiest individual on the planet, now possesses a fortune roughly four times that of Google's Larry Page, who is the second-richest person.
A Progressive Platform, A Concrete Policy
Mamdani, a progressive Democrat, campaigned heavily on a platform of taxing the ultra-wealthy. New York City has already enacted a pied-à-terre tax on multimillion-dollar second homes—a move that has drawn criticism from some of the city's wealthiest residents.
Despite their political chasm, the two figures share an unexpected common ground. Mamdani recently announced a Commission on Government Efficiency, modeled directly after the Musk-led DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) office in the White House.
Adversaries in Politics, Allies in Efficiency
Musk has been a vocal opponent of Mamdani’s administration, publicly endorsing challenger Governor Andrew Cuomo in the 2025 mayoral election. Yet, Mamdani remains pragmatic about their relationship.
"We share a focus on efficiency and reducing waste," Mamdani stated, acknowledging their ideological differences while pointing to mutual goals of cutting bureaucratic bloat.
The mayor's push to tax the rich, juxtaposed with his willingness to borrow from Musk's efficiency playbook, underscores a complex dynamic as New York City navigates its fiscal future.
