Fallen Officer Killed in Dawn Raid: Investigation Links to Global Terror Network

Key Details

Constable Marc Pinizzotto, a 43-year-old father of two, was killed on Thursday during a dawn search of an apartment in west Toronto. The search was related to multiple shootings, including one targeting the US consulate in Toronto in March.

Investigation

Authorities are investigating whether the killing is linked to a broader series of global terror attacks.

A police source cited possible connections to a "shooters for hire" network targeting waste management companies and private homes, as well as a global terror network that has threatened retribution for US attacks on Iran.

In May, US authorities charged Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi with terrorism; he is alleged to have claimed responsibility for the Toronto consulate shooting. The RCMP did not respond to questions about a possible connection.

Charges and Suspects

Nicholas Bennett, 19, has been charged with first-degree murder of Pinizzotto. Police are also searching for Zara Jabbi, 19, who remains at large and is considered armed.

Incident Details

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating the shooting, which occurred during an exchange of gunfire. Four other people were in the apartment at the time.

Tributes

"Pinizzotto, a father of two, served for 18 years."

Tributes were paid by Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
