Tent Collapse at Virginia Church Kills One, Injures 22
A massive tent at EastLake Community Church in Moneta, Virginia, collapsed during a severe storm on the evening of June 9, 2025, resulting in one fatality and 22 injuries.
Incident Details
The collapse occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. during a 20th-anniversary celebration and family event hosted by the church. The event included a service, food, water activities for children, and ice cream. The tent had seating for approximately 1,500 people.
According to Abbey Johnston, acting chief of Bedford County Fire and Rescue, heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds occurred as the event was concluding. The pastor was in the process of evacuating the tent when the structure collapsed.
Casualties and Medical Response
- One person died at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
- Eleven individuals were transported to local hospitals.
- Eleven others were treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.
Cause
Officials reported that the tent collapsed due to strong winds associated with a severe thunderstorm watch that was in effect for most of Virginia until 9 p.m. that evening. The tent had been inspected by the Bedford County Division of Building Inspections on June 9, 2025, and it was reported to have been properly secured.
Statements from Officials and Church Leadership
Pastor Troy Keaton stated that a gust of wind lifted the tent as he was about to release congregants to their cars. He confirmed one fatality and multiple injuries and said the church is focused on caring for and praying for the affected individuals.
Governor Abigail Spanberger confirmed that her team was in contact with responders and offered support.
The church posted on Facebook that a severe weather incident caused the tent failure and requested prayers and patience.
