MacBook Lifespan and Software Support Outlook

View source

A customer reported using a MacBook Pro purchased in 2010 as a daily driver until 2017.

The general lifespan of a MacBook Pro is estimated at 7–10 years, with the MacBook Air being comparable. Apple does not officially specify Mac lifespan. All Apple Silicon Macs are currently supported.

macOS 27 will drop support for Intel Macs; M1 Macs are likely to receive software updates until at least September 2027. The phase-out timeline for Apple Silicon chips remains unclear. macOS Tahoe still supports most Intel Macs released by 2019 and early 2020.

Software Support and Longevity

Apple typically stops software support for MacBook Air models before their MacBook Pro counterparts. Older Macs may continue to function after official support ends, and Apple may provide security patches for up to two additional years.
