Medline Warehouse Fire Continues to Burn; Air Quality Deteriorates in Tracy
A massive fire at a Medline medical equipment warehouse in Tracy, California, has been burning since Thursday, sending plumes of smoke across the region.
Officials Warn of Unhealthy Air
Air quality on the south side of Tracy has reached unhealthy levels, prompting officials to advise sensitive individuals—including those with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and children—to stay indoors. The fire continues to burn inside the 1 million-square-foot facility, located about 55 miles east of San Francisco.
Firefighters anticipate smoky conditions will persist for several days as they work to fully extinguish the blaze.
Investigation Underway
The fire marshal is actively investigating the cause of the fire. Officials are meeting with company representatives and structural engineers to assess the building's stability.
Key Challenge: Fire Suppression System Fails
Efforts to suppress the fire were hampered by poorly functioning sprinklers and hydrants that had low or no flow. The issue appears to be related to the facility's own fire-suppression system, not the city water supplies. An outside company tested the sprinkler system in January and found no issues.
Hazardous Debris and Public Safety
Medline, a major provider of medical-surgical products—including latex gloves, masks, and surgical instruments—has seen the fire send embers flying for miles. Firefighters are urging the public to avoid the area and not to touch or move any debris from the fire.
Plans are being made for employees to safely retrieve their vehicles from the site.
