Deadly Helicopter Collision in Rio de Janeiro Suburb
Six people are dead after two helicopters collided mid-air over a western suburb of Rio de Janeiro, crashing into a car park and sparking a blaze that engulfed nearly two dozen electric vehicles.
The Incident
On Sunday morning, two helicopters collided over Recreio dos Bandeirantes, a residential area in the western part of Rio de Janeiro. The first helicopter was carrying five people, all of whom were killed. The second helicopter was piloted alone, and that pilot also died, bringing the total fatality count to six.
The wreckage fell directly onto the car park of an electric vehicle dealership. The impact and subsequent fire ignited approximately 20 vehicles, creating a hazardous scene for emergency responders.
The Challenge for Firefighters
Extinguishing the blaze proved exceptionally difficult. Fire services spokesman Fabio Contreiras explained that lithium-ion batteries in the electric vehicles released toxic gases, complicating the operation.
"Extinguishing a fire in an electric vehicle requires three to four times the water needed for a standard car fire," Contreiras stated.
He also noted that the death toll would have been significantly higher had the crash occurred in a more populated area. Debris from the collision was scattered hundreds of meters from the immediate crash site.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the collision is currently under investigation. No further details have been released regarding the flight paths or the circumstances leading up to the mid-air impact.

Helicopter crashes are a recurring issue in Brazil. According to data from Brazil's aviation agency, CENIPA, there had already been 84 aircraft accidents in 2026 prior to this incident.
