Google announced on Friday that the flight simulator feature, previously limited to its desktop application, is now accessible through the Google Earth web browser version. The tool became available on June 12.
Access and Setup
To use the simulator:
- Navigate to the Google Earth website (earth.google.com).
- Click the "Explore Earth" button near the top right corner.
- Select "Flight Simulator" from the Tools menu.
- Google recommends finding a location of interest and switching the basemap from "Map" to "Satellite" for optimal visibility.
Controls and Operation
Users can control the aircraft using either a keyboard or a mouse. Google provides a help page with detailed instructions for the controls. The simulator requires practice to operate. Keyboard shortcuts are available on the Developers' page.
Crash Handling
If the aircraft crashes, the simulator pauses the simulation. No crash graphics are displayed. Users are offered the option to reset to a safe altitude and restart their journey.
