Supreme Court Rejects Carter Page Lawsuit Against James Comey and FBI Officials

The Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from Carter Page, a former adviser to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Page sought to revive a lawsuit against former FBI Director James Comey and seven other FBI officials over warrant applications used for surveillance during the Russia investigation.

A federal judge had ruled that Page filed the lawsuit too late; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld that decision.

The warrant applications were later found to be faulty by a Justice Department watchdog. Page's claims against the federal government were settled by the Trump administration and were not part of the Supreme Court appeal. The remaining claims alleged that Comey and other individuals violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Key Statement from the Justice Department

A Justice Department spokesman stated after the settlement: "No American should ever face covert and unlawful surveillance based on their political view. The investigation into Carter Page — a man never charged with a single crime — relied on inherently flawed and uncorroborated information, proving it was a political sham from the get-go."

Comey attorney David N. Kelley declined to comment on the settlement.
