"Quite shocking" and "very traumatised" were the words used by one victim to describe the ordeal.

Sentencing

William Gilfillan, 69, was sentenced at the Victorian County Court on Tuesday to seven and a half years in prison with no parole for sexually assaulting two students while he was a physical education teacher at Traralgon High School between 1982 and 1983.

He was found guilty in December 2025 of one charge of sexual penetration of a person under 16 and four charges of indecent assault of a person over 16 years. One victim testified that Gilfillan used calipers to perform skin pinch tests on her breasts and genitals, describing the experience as "quite shocking" and leaving her "very traumatised."

Background

Gilfillan is already serving a 48-year sentence in New South Wales for sexually abusing and torturing his daughter, Jess Denham, over 15 years, beginning when she was five. He was convicted in 2018 of 73 offences.

Gilfillan will be 92 years old when he becomes eligible for parole in 2049 for the NSW offences.

Justice Amanda Chambers stated that while an additional sentence would have been considered if the NSW sentence were shorter, the current sentence serves as vindication for the two victims. Gilfillan must also register as a sex offender under the Victorian Sex Offenders Registration Act 2004.
