A shooting at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware on Tuesday afternoon resulted in one death and one injury. The suspected shooter, a hospital employee, was arrested later that evening in Philadelphia.
Incident and Response
Police responded to the facility at approximately 3:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting inside the hospital. The facility was placed under lockdown, which has since been lifted.
According to law enforcement, the shooter, identified as 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey of New Castle, Delaware, allegedly shot two other employees. Both victims are 19-year-old men. The deceased victim's name has not been released. The surviving victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigation
Police believe the shooting was a targeted and isolated incident. License plate readers helped track the suspect to Philadelphia, where he was taken into custody in the city's Olney section. Wallace-Bey faces charges of murder and attempted murder, pending extradition to Delaware.
Hospital Statement
ChristianaCare, the operator of the hospital, stated that it diverted patients from its emergency department and implemented safety measures following the incident. The incoming president and CEO of ChristianaCare expressed condolences to those affected.
