WhatsApp Developing Text-Only "View Once" Feature for Enhanced Privacy
WhatsApp is expanding its privacy-focused "view once" functionality, currently developing a feature that will allow users to send text messages that can be viewed only a single time before they disappear. The feature is still in development and has not yet been made available to beta testers.
Users would long-press the Send button to select "Send as view once" from a dropdown menu.
How It Works
Once a message is sent with this setting, the recipient can open it exactly once. After it has been read, the message becomes permanently inaccessible. This mechanism is designed to provide an extra layer of privacy for sensitive text-based communications.
Where It Will Be Available
The view-once text feature will be accessible in both individual chats and group conversations. However, it will not be available for use in channels, maintaining a clear distinction between different types of communication spaces on the platform.
Building on Existing Features
This new capability represents a natural extension of WhatsApp's existing view-once option, which currently applies to:
- Photos
- Videos
- Voice notes
A Workaround Becomes Official
In the past, some users have worked around the limitation of disappearing messages by adding text to an image and sending it as a view-once media file. This upcoming feature eliminates the need for such workarounds, offering a direct and streamlined option for sending ephemeral text.
Context and Recent Updates
- A previous beta build of WhatsApp added an "After reading" option to disappearing messages, enabling messages to vanish immediately after being read.
- Currently, WhatsApp's standard disappearing messages feature offers three timer options: 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days.
This development underscores WhatsApp's continued commitment to giving users more granular control over their message privacy and ephemerality.
