Back in the Spotlight: Lil Nas X Opens Up About Bipolar Diagnosis and Rehab

Lil Nas X is speaking publicly for the first time about his mental health journey, revealing that he has been in rehab and was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

The Grammy-winning artist, born Montero Lamar Hill, shared an update on Instagram on Wednesday, giving fans a rare and candid look into his personal struggles.

"When I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis, I feel like I had known for the past few years, but I didn’t want to admit to it," he said in the video.

A Step Toward Wellness

Hill stated that he has been in rehab for a few months and has since returned to both Atlanta and Los Angeles. He emphasized that the support system he now has in place is making a significant difference.

  • Professional Support: He confirmed he now has a therapist and a psychiatrist, which he called "really helpful."
  • Progress: He noted he avoided the diagnosis earlier because he "didn’t want to have to take medication" or worry about what people would think.

"I’m doing much better. I’m feeling better. I’m creating freely. And there’s less fear in my heart."

Behind the Headlines: The 2023 Arrest

This update follows a tumultuous period for the artist. In August 2023, Lil Nas X was arrested after allegedly charging at Los Angeles police officers who had responded to a report of a naked man walking on a a boulevard.

He was subsequently charged with three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. However, in April 2024, a judge allowed him to enter a mental health diversion program.

The court recognized his actions were a direct result of his condition, finding that the encounter with police was "an aberration from his usual behavior." If he complies with the program for two years, the charges will be dismissed.

What’s Next for the Artist?

Despite the challenges, Lil Nas X is looking forward. He ended his update with a promise to fans and a personal commitment to his craft.

"I love you and all I want to do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud," he said.

He also confirmed that new music is on the way, indicating that a creative resurgence is underway alongside his recovery.
