SpaceX Appoints Former Sequoia Capital Partner Roelof Botha to Board

SpaceX has appointed Roelof Botha, the former managing partner of Sequoia Capital, to its board of directors, filling an existing vacancy.

The appointment was disclosed in an SEC filing on Wednesday. Botha will serve until the next annual shareholder meeting and will join the board's audit committee.

A family member of Botha has worked at SpaceX since January 2025 on the enterprise operations team, with compensation exceeding $120,000, reported as generally commensurate with peers.

Background

Botha stepped down as Sequoia's managing partner in 2023 amid controversy over partner Shaun Maguire's comments. He has served on numerous public company boards and has a long-standing relationship with Elon Musk, having been hired by Musk to run finance at PayPal in 2000.

SpaceX went public in the largest IPO ever less than a week before the announcement. CEO Elon Musk holds over 80% voting power and controls board changes.

With Botha, the board now has nine directors, including Musk, Shotwell, and several longtime Musk associates.

Sequoia Capital invested in SpaceX in 2019 and reportedly owned 1.5% of the company before the IPO, valued at over $20 billion.
