Android 17 Update Causes Widget Loss for Pixel Users with Work Profile

View source

Google has confirmed a bug in Android 17 that causes home screen widgets to vanish for users with an active Work Profile.

The Problem

Some Google Pixel users who installed the Android 17 update have reported that home screen widgets have disappeared from both their home screen and the widget picker. The issue appears to be limited to devices with an active Work Profile configured.

Known Cause

Google has confirmed that the bug is related to the Work Profile feature. Disabling the Work Profile restores widgets, but adding a new profile can cause the issue to reappear.

Acknowledgment and Fix Timeline

Google stated: "We are aware of this bug affecting Work Profile users, and a fix will be rolled out in a software update soon." Android Community Engagement Manager Mishaal Rahman confirmed on Reddit that the company is aware of the bug. Google has not provided a specific timeline, but based on typical update schedules, the fix may arrive with the next monthly security update.

Workarounds

Google has not provided a single, definitive workaround. Several temporary measures have been suggested:

  • Disable or archive affected apps before restoring them.
  • Toggle focus mode temporarily.
  • Update Work Profile settings on the management side.
  • Remove the Work Profile entirely. If removed, restart the phone and manually re-add widgets. Users who rely on their Work Profile must choose between keeping it enabled or having access to widgets.
