HDMI 2.2: The Next Frontier for High-Bandwidth Connectivity

Announced nearly a year ago, the new specification supports up to 96 Gbps bandwidth, doubling the 48 Gbps throughput of HDMI 2.1.

What HDMI 2.2 Brings

The HDMI 2.2 standard is designed to handle the most demanding video resolutions and refresh rates. It enables 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz, making it a future-proof solution for high-end displays.

The specification introduces three distinct bandwidth tiers to cater to different product categories: 64 Gbps, 80 Gbps, and 96 Gbps.

On the Horizon for 2025

According to Charbax of ARMdevices.net, a key latency indication protocol has already appeared in certified products. Furthermore, chip manufacturers are sampling FRL-2 silicon this year, paving the way for 96 Gbps hardware releases in 2025.

HDMI Licensing Administrator CEO Rob Tobias confirmed that products with up to 96 Gbps HDMI 2.2 should appear next year. He also noted that upgraded cables may launch within the next two quarters.

Which Devices Will Get It?

While specific models remain unconfirmed, devices likely to feature HDMI 2.2 include high-end TVs, AV receivers, projectors, and game consoles.

A Welcome Benchmark for 2026

In a related development, more TV manufacturers—including Hisense and Philips—are expected to offer four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports in 2026. Notably, Samsung and LG have already offered this configuration for approximately nine years.
