Key Facts
Ebola can be transmitted through contact with bodily fluids of deceased individuals, who often carry high viral loads.
During the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, funerals were identified as a significant source of infection.
Evidence of Transmission at Funerals
- In Moyamba, Sierra Leone, a single funeral was linked to 28 confirmed cases and 8 deaths. 75% of those infected had touched or carried the corpse.
- In Guinea, one funeral was linked to 85 confirmed cases and 63 deaths.
Adaptation of Funeral Practices
Public health measures are more successful when communities participate in their design.
Current strategies include:
- Consulting families on funeral arrangements
- Allowing choice of clothing or shroud
- Enabling participation in prayers and religious rites
- Permitting witnessing of burial and future grave visits
- Training religious leaders to perform rituals while wearing protective clothing
Burial teams provide clear explanations and answer questions to maintain trust.
