Beetlejuice the Musical Cuts Australian Tour Short
The Michael Cassel Group announced on Friday that Beetlejuice the Musical will end its Australian run early, canceling scheduled performances in Sydney, Perth, and Adelaide. The final show will be on July 5 at QPAC in Brisbane.
Reasons for Cancellation
The producer cited increasing cost pressures from touring across large distances between Australian cities. A cautious consumer environment also contributed to the decision, with the economics of moving a large-scale production ultimately deemed unsustainable.
Statements
Michael Cassel Group Spokesperson
"While audience enthusiasm for the show has been encouraging, a more cautious consumer environment combined with the economics of moving a production of this magnitude could not be justified."
Andy Karl (actor playing Beetlejuice)
In an Instagram post, Karl addressed the cast and crew directly: "It sucks for everybody who was part of the production already... Let's haunt this b**** til July 5."
Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA)
The union called the cancellation "deeply disappointing and devastating for the cast, crew and musicians," highlighting the precarious nature of creative work and the gap between the National Cultural Policy's ambitions and industry realities. The MEAA stated it will pursue entitlements owed to affected members.
Adelaide Festival Centre Spokeswoman
While noting that ticket sales for the Adelaide season had been "tracking very strongly," the spokeswoman said the cancellation relates to the commercial viability of the national tour as a whole.
