"Men are more comfortable discussing sports or work than health, but such conversations can save lives."
A community lunch aimed at breaking the silence around men's health will be held at Morgan Engineering in Singleton during International Men's Health Week.
Organized by Business Singleton, the event will feature Federal Member for Hunter and Special Envoy for Men's Health, Dan Repacholi MP. He will be joined by Tammy Howell from Core Health Consulting, author of The Real Man's Toolbox.
The event is designed to encourage men to have conversations about their health in a relaxed environment and to promote preventative healthcare.
Free Health Checks and Community Support
The Men's Health Education Rural Van (MHERV) will provide free health checks on site, with support from the Rotary Clubs of Warners Bay. A barbecue lunch will be provided by the Singleton Men's Shed.
"Don't Put It in the Too-Hard Basket"
Repacholi emphasized that Men's Health Week is about not putting health in the "too-hard basket."
He noted that men are more comfortable discussing sports or work than health, but such conversations can save lives. He encouraged men who have delayed check-ups or conversations with their GP to take action now.
"Men who have delayed check-ups or conversations with their GP should take action now."
Repacholi thanked the organizing partners for their support.
A Broader Health Concern
The initiative addresses a significant public health issue: men generally have poorer health outcomes and are less likely to engage in preventive health checks than women. Early detection is considered an effective way to improve health outcomes and save lives.
