USMNT Advances to Knockout Stage After 2-0 Win Over Australia

A dominant performance in their second Group D match has propelled the United States Men's National Team into the knockout stage of the 2023 World Cup. The USMNT defeated Australia 2-0, securing their place in the next round.

"We knew what was at stake, and the team delivered," a team spokesperson stated after the match.

Alex Freeman scored the second goal of the match in the 43rd minute with a powerful header, set up by a precise cross. Later in the day, Paraguay’s defeat of Türkiye mathematically confirmed the USMNT's advancement.

A Debut to Remember: Alex Freeman

At just 21 years old, Alex Freeman is making his World Cup debut as a defender. His journey to the global stage is a remarkable story of choosing his own path. He is the son of former NFL wide receiver Antonio Freeman, a key player for the Green Bay Packers who won Super Bowl XXXI.

Despite a strong athletic pedigree in American football and basketball, Alex chose soccer after childhood. He joined Orlando City’s youth academy in 2020, made his MLS debut in 2025, and quickly earned a spot in the MLS All-Star Game. His rise continued with a transfer to Villarreal CF in La Liga in January 2025 for a fee of $4 million, which could rise to $7 million. Alex made his debut for the USMNT in June 2025.

Family Support and Inspiration

Antonio Freeman has been a vocal supporter of his son’s career choice. "Alex’s joy was on the soccer field," Antonio stated, emphasizing his full support.

Alex credits his father’s influence as a driving force. "He instilled competitiveness in me and has always been a role model," Alex said. Antonio expressed elation upon learning his son had made the World Cup roster.

  • Giovanni Reyna: son of Claudio Reyna (former USMNT captain) and Danielle Egan Reyna (former USWNT player).
