AI & 3D Scans Outperform Traditional Exams for Tooth Wear Detection
A new study from King's College London suggests that artificial intelligence, when combined with 3D digital scans, could significantly improve the detection and monitoring of erosive tooth wear.
Published in the Journal of Dentistry, the research analyzed 61 adults and 1,600 teeth, directly comparing traditional dental examinations with digital scan analysis powered by AI.
Key findings reveal that digital scans and AI identified more cases of significant tooth wear than routine exams. While human dentists showed variability in their assessments, AI demonstrated consistent, reproducible results. The technology was also highly effective at identifying dentine exposure, a key indicator of advanced damage.
Lead author Dr. Saoirse O'Toole emphasized that the goal is to support, not replace, dentists. "AI is intended to add objectivity and consistency to assessments," she stated, positioning the technology as a powerful tool for enhancing diagnostic precision.
