Multiple Vehicle Collisions Near Wollongong Lead to Hospitalizations and Road Closures

View source

Two separate multi-vehicle collisions occurred near Wollongong on Wednesday, resulting in multiple hospitalizations, significant road closures, and extensive clean-up operations. One incident on Picton Road involved several cars and a truck, leading to five to six individuals requiring hospital transport. The second incident, a collision between two trucks on the M1 Princes Motorway, caused a large molasses spill and hospitalized two drivers.

Picton Road Multi-Vehicle Collision

Incident Overview

A multi-vehicle collision took place on Picton Road at Cataract, north of Wollongong, at approximately midday on Wednesday. The incident involved a truck and at least five cars, stretching over an estimated 130 meters.

Initial reports suggest a male driver of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, described as 44 years old in one account and 38 years old in another, veered into the opposing lane. This action is being investigated as potentially related to a medical episode.

A semi-trailer, traveling in the opposite direction, reportedly clipped the four-wheel-drive, subsequently struck a guard rail, and then jackknifed across the road. The jackknifed semi-trailer then collided with five additional vehicles.

Authorities are investigating if a medical episode may have caused a four-wheel-drive to veer into the opposing lane, triggering a chain of collisions involving a semi-trailer and five other vehicles.

Casualties and Emergency Response

Emergency services responded to the scene, where thirteen individuals were assessed by paramedics. Five to six patients required hospital transport:

  • The male driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition. His wife was also transported to Liverpool Hospital, according to one report.
  • Four additional patients were transported by road to Wollongong Hospital with various injuries, some attributed to sun exposure at the scene.
  • The male truck driver was extricated by Fire and Rescue NSW without physical injury but was transported to a hospital for mandatory testing as part of the investigation.

Road Status and Aftermath

The collision resulted in the closure of Picton Road in both directions. Approximately 100 litres of diesel spilled at the scene, requiring specialist fire trucks for containment, with the Rural Fire Service providing additional fire protection. Preliminary assessments indicated the spilled fuel did not pose an immediate threat to vehicles. The road has since been reopened.

Investigation

Wollongong Police are conducting ongoing inquiries into the cause of the incident. Authorities have interviewed several individuals at the scene and intend to speak with additional witnesses.

M1 Princes Motorway Two-Truck Collision

Incident Overview

A separate collision involving two trucks occurred on the M1 Princes Motorway near the Kanahooka Road overpass, south of Wollongong, shortly after 10 pm on Wednesday. The incident caused significant damage to both vehicles and resulted in thousands of litres of molasses spilling onto the highway.

Thousands of litres of molasses spilled onto the M1 Princes Motorway following a two-truck collision, necessitating a major clean-up operation.

Casualties and Emergency Response

Emergency services, including NSW Ambulance, Fire and Rescue NSW, the Traffic Management Centre, and Lake Illawarra Police, responded to the scene. Crews reported finding severe vehicle damage and one driver ejected onto the roadway.

  • The driver of a B-double truck sustained serious injuries and was flown to St George Hospital, where they are now in stable condition.
  • The driver of a rigid truck was transported by ambulance to St George Hospital in serious condition. Mandatory testing for the rigid truck driver is underway as part of the investigation.

Road Status and Aftermath

The molasses spill necessitated a major clean-up operation by private contractors. One northbound lane of the motorway has since re-opened, while southbound traffic experienced intermittent stoppages as emergency services continued work. Motorists were advised to use the Princes Highway as an alternative route. The clean-up was expected to last several hours, with traffic delays potentially continuing into Thursday morning.
