Android 17 Brings Native LHDC 5.0 Support to Pixel Devices

Native support for the high-bitrate LHDC codec arrives in Android 17, giving users a new premium wireless audio option beyond LDAC.

Users on the latest Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL have confirmed that Android 17 includes native support for the Low Latency High-Definition Audio Codec (LHDC) version 5.0. The codec is now selectable in Developer Options under the Bluetooth Audio Codec menu, provided compatible hardware is connected.

LHDC v5 supports resolution up to 24-bit/192kHz with a maximum bitrate of 1Mbps, placing it in the same high-performance category as Sony's LDAC codec.

Savitech Corp, the creator of the LHDC codec, stated in March that Android 17 would include native LHDC support. This development indicates that future devices from Samsung, OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi will also support the codec, significantly expanding high-bitrate wireless audio options across the Android ecosystem.
