Tragedy in Lucknow: Fire at Commercial Building Claims 18 Lives, Mostly Students

A devastating fire in Lucknow's Aliganj area on Monday has left 18 people dead and several others injured, prompting arrests, suspensions of public officials, and the formation of a special investigation team.

Incident Details

The fire broke out on the second floor of the building at approximately 2:30 PM local time (14:45 IST / 09:15 GMT). Initial reports indicate the blaze was triggered by a blast in an air conditioner compressor. Thick smoke rapidly spread to the upper floors, trapping individuals inside.

The building housed a mix of commercial and educational facilities, including:

  • A pet shop (ground floor, unaffected)
  • Warehouse
  • Animation training center
  • Library
  • Coaching facilities

The building's single staircase was engulfed by flames and smoke, blocking the sole exit. Victims responded in desperate ways: some jumped from windows or terraces, others locked themselves in bathrooms, and a few climbed down power cables. Most deaths were attributed to smoke inhalation.

Local residents and Lance Naik Chhaviram initiated rescue efforts before firefighters, police, and SDRF teams arrived. Rescue personnel reached the terrace via a neighboring building and breached a side wall to access trapped individuals.

Regulatory Violations

Investigations revealed a pattern of serious safety lapses:

The building was approved only for a residential ground floor but was operating as a four-story commercial structure.

Additional violations include:

  • No no-objection certificate from the fire and electrical safety departments
  • Sanctioned electricity load was 20 kW, but the building was drawing 35.5 kW—an overload of nearly 80 percent
  • Some relatives reported that a biometric entry system may have hindered escape

Official Response and Legal Action

Four joint owners of the building were arrested. Police have filed charges related to acts causing or endangering life. Four government officials were suspended for negligence. A two-member special investigation team was formed to submit a report within seven days.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak stated that an inquiry has been initiated and authorities have been directed to prevent future incidents.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site and King George Medical University (KGMU). He stated:

"We cannot bring back the lives lost, but I assure you that those responsible will not be spared."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex gratia payments of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Previous Incident

The fire follows a similar blaze at a bed-and-breakfast in Delhi less than one month prior, raising renewed concerns about fire safety enforcement in commercial buildings across the country.
