Salesian Missionaries Ramp Up Ebola Prevention in Eastern DRC

Amid a worsening outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Salesian missionaries are intensifying preventive measures at their centers in eastern provinces. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports over 750 suspected cases and more than 170 deaths linked to the virus.

"The most important thing now is to keep people well informed and avoid panic." – Salesians in Goma

Key Prevention Measures

To stem the spread, the missionaries have implemented several new protocols:

  • Installation of new hand-washing stations at all facilities.
  • Intensified hygiene campaigns targeting high-traffic areas.
  • Awareness initiatives designed to educate youth and families on infection prevention and how to respond to symptoms.

Outbreak Hotspots and Context

Most infections remain concentrated in Ituri province, but there is growing concern for North Kivu due to significant population movement. In the city of Goma—where a major Salesian center operates—only isolated cases have been reported so far.

The situation is compounded by the region's existing crises. As Salesian Father Domingo de la Hera noted:

"The population is tired of constantly living with emergencies including war, displacement, hunger and now also the fear of Ebola."

Goma itself faces daily challenges of violence, displacement, and extreme poverty. Salesian centers in the city—including Don Bosco Ngangi, Bosco Lac, and the Goma Technical and Industrial Institute—continue to provide education, food, support, and basic medical care despite the heightened risk.

WHO Warning and Regional Reach

The WHO has assessed the risk as "very high," citing:

  • The fragility of the healthcare system.
  • Ongoing insecurity in affected zones.
  • High levels of population movement.

Complicating the response, no specific vaccine is currently approved for the identified strain.

Salesian Presence Across the DRC

Salesian missionaries, who have worked in the DRC for over 100 years, operate schools, youth centers, and child support programs across a wide geographic area, including:

  • Lubumbashi, Kinshasa, Mbuji-Mayi, Tshikapa
  • Kasenga, Mokambo, Sakania, Kipushya
  • Uvira, Bukavu, Nyakadaka, and Kalemie

Despite the ongoing dangers, the Salesians remain committed to their mission, focusing on keeping communities informed and maintaining essential services for the most vulnerable.
