Daryl Braithwaite Retires from Live Performance at 77

The Australian music icon and former Sherbet frontman has announced his retirement from live shows, citing ongoing physical difficulties with his throat.

"It's broken my heart to think of how appreciative people have been."

Braithwaite, 77, made the announcement via his social media accounts on June 23, 2026, and in an interview with 774 ABC Melbourne. His career in the music industry spans 58 years.

Career Background

Braithwaite began his career in the 1960s. He rose to prominence in the 1970s as the lead singer of the rock band Sherbet, known for hits including "Howzat" and "Summer Love." He joined Sherbet in 1970 and remained until the 1980s, later reuniting with the band for tours until 2011.

After leaving Sherbet, he launched a solo career. His solo hits include covers of "The Horses" (1991) and "You're My World" (1974), both of which reached number 1 on Australian singles charts. Braithwaite was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2017.

His career included periods of unemployment and a midlife resurgence with other hits. He performed on a cruise in Norway on a Norwegian cruise liner from late May to early June 2025, and joined Harry Styles on stage in Sydney in 2023.

Details of Retirement

Braithwaite stated that he had considered retiring for up to a year. The decision was finalized after his third gig on an Arctic cruise tour. He cited increasing physical challenges related to his throat that affected his ability to breathe while singing.

"I personally would love to keep doing it because physically I feel like I could but in my throat, it's not complying with how I feel."

He stated he would miss every aspect of live performance. In a 2025 interview, Braithwaite noted he took care of his voice and would stop if he felt he was not performing up to his standards.

Braithwaite thanked his supporters and associated organizations in his statement.

Health History

In early 2025, Braithwaite canceled and rescheduled several shows due to an unspecified medical condition affecting his voice. He later resumed touring.
