"The platform is in the strongest position it's ever been... it was the right moment to step back."
Leadership Transition
Will Cathcart announced on Monday that he is stepping down as head of WhatsApp after nearly seven years. Kunal Shah, founder of Indian fintech company Cred, has been appointed by Meta to succeed him. Cathcart will remain in a leadership role within Meta.
Cathcart stated that the platform is "in the strongest position it's ever been" and that he felt it was "the right moment to step back." He did not provide a specific reason for his departure beyond this assessment.
Shah, who founded Cred in 2018, will take over leadership of WhatsApp. He is the first Indian to lead the platform, which has over three billion users worldwide, with India as its largest market.
Shah's Background and Stake
Shah wrote on Monday that he will continue as a shareholder in Cred while taking the new role at WhatsApp. He noted that Cred raised $900 million in investment from Meta, giving Meta a 20% stake in Cred, and stated that Meta will have "no access to member data."
Cred is a Bengaluru-based fintech platform that offers a members-only service rewarding users for timely credit card payments. The company has since expanded into lending, insurance, commerce, and wealth management.
Prior to founding Cred, Shah co-founded FreeCharge in 2010, a mobile recharge platform acquired by Snapdeal in 2015. He has invested in technology firms and served as an adviser with Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital.
Statements from Meta and Others
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Shah created "one of India's most important technology companies" with Cred and brings a "builder mentality and global perspective."
Shweta Rajpal Kohli, CEO of Startup Policy Forum, described Shah as having "a rare ability to bring a product lens to regulatory complexity, and a regulatory lens to product design."
Nikhil Pahwa, founder of MediaNama, noted that Shah's selection may reflect experience in consumer behavior and scaling consumer businesses, not solely fintech.
Context
The appointment occurs as WhatsApp seeks to expand beyond messaging into payments, business services, and AI-powered products. Shah responded to criticism about startup profitability by stating that profitable businesses deserve recognition but entrepreneurship should be encouraged for job creation and risk-taking.
Shah studied philosophy in college in Mumbai, choosing the subject partly due to its morning class schedule allowing him to work during his family's financial difficulties.
