Trump Endorsement Reshapes Michigan GOP Gubernatorial Primary
Lansing, MI — Former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed U.S. Representative John James in the crowded Republican primary for Michigan governor.
The endorsement immediately altered the dynamics of the race. Following Trump’s announcement, Michigan state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt suspended his campaign and threw his support behind James.
"I am proud to endorse John James for Governor of Michigan," Trump stated in his endorsement. "He is a tremendous patriot and a proven winner who will take Michigan back from the radical left."
However, the endorsement was not universally welcomed. Businessman Perry Johnson, a fellow primary candidate, sharply criticized Trump’s choice.
Johnson pointed to James’s electoral record, noting he has lost statewide elections previously, including a 2020 Senate bid against Democrat Gary Peters and a 2018 challenge to Senator Debbie Stabenow.
"Michigan Republicans need a candidate who can actually win a general election," Johnson said. "We cannot afford to nominate someone who has already proven they cannot close the deal on a statewide level."
Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, also a candidate in the primary, offered measured commentary on the race's latest development.
The primary field now includes a mix of established politicians and political newcomers, all vying for the chance to challenge incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer in the general election.
Nesbitt, in his suspension announcement, framed his exit as an effort to unify the party. "To ensure we defeat Governor Whitmer, we must rally behind the strongest ticket," Nesbitt said. "That is why I am suspending my campaign and endorsing John James."
With the endorsement, James gains the organizational and financial backing of the Trump political machine, a significant asset in a competitive primary. The move consolidates a key faction of the party, but also highlights the ongoing internal debate over electability versus ideological loyalty.
