Republican Senators Warn Trump's Demands Are Hurting the Party

Key Statements

“It is not helpful to his agenda, not helpful to the country, certainly not helpful to our electoral chances.”
— Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)

Republican senators are voicing concerns that President Donald Trump’s legislative demands are obstructing progress and threatening the party’s chances in upcoming elections.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) stated that Trump’s actions—including stalling his own director of national intelligence nominee and refusing to sign a housing bill unless it is paired with a voter ID bill—are hindering both his agenda and the party.

She noted that lacking votes for the Save Act, his demand cannot succeed, making the standoff ultimately counterproductive.

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) suggested a different approach, arguing that Trump could be more effective by highlighting legislative successes already achieved, such as tax cuts, border security funding, and the housing bill. Emphasizing these wins, Cramer said, would benefit future legislation and provide stronger messaging to voters.
