An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan on Monday convicted and sentenced doctor-turned-activist Mahrang Baloch and fellow activist Sibghatullah Shah to life imprisonment. They were found guilty of terrorism, sedition, and murder related to the death of a paramilitary soldier during a protest in Gwadar in 2024. Both deny the charges and plan to appeal.
Background
Mahrang Baloch became an activist after her father, Abdul Ghaffar Langove, disappeared in 2009 and was found dead three years later, allegedly tortured.
She led a movement demanding answers about enforced disappearances in Balochistan province. She was arrested in 2025.
Statements
Mahrang's sister, Nadia Baloch, stated the family will challenge the decision in higher courts and expressed emotional difficulty visiting her sister in prison.
