"Accidental obstruction of railway tracks should be treated as an emergency." – ATSB Director Kerri Hughes
Incident Overview
On August 14, 2023, at approximately 6:47 AM, a B-double truck became immobilised on the Bonemill Road level crossing in Runcorn, Brisbane. The rear trailer obstructed the tracks. The truck driver exited the vehicle to inspect it while cars drove around. The level crossing warning equipment activated and the boom barrier lowered several minutes later.
Collision Details
An express Queensland Rail service carrying about 300 passengers had just passed Fruitgrove Station. The train driver noticed a "large shadow" on the tracks and activated the country horn.
The train was traveling at about 99 km/h and was approximately 317 meters from the crossing when the driver identified the shadow as a vehicle and applied emergency brakes. The train struck the side of the truck at 41 km/h, causing substantial damage to both vehicles.
Casualties and Response
No serious injuries were reported. Paramedics treated six passengers for minor injuries.
Obstruction Duration
The truck obstructed the tracks for 4 minutes and 24 seconds. The ATSB noted this duration provided an opportunity for an alarm to be raised.
Reporting and Monitoring
Signage at the crossing provided an emergency phone number for incident reporting. However, neither the truck driver nor several bystanders contacted network control or emergency services. The level crossing CCTV was not actively monitored at the time.
Investigation Findings
The ATSB investigation found that the driver's response, combined with the truck being empty, prevented more serious consequences. ATSB Director Kerri Hughes stated the accident "serves as a reminder that accidental obstruction of railway tracks should be treated as an emergency."
Aftermath
Queensland Rail has committed to an independent review of its level crossing management methodology.
