Suspect in fatal highway shootings found dead in basement of burned home

Police in Independence, Missouri, have confirmed the discovery of a body believed to be that of Oscar Sanchez Munoz, the suspect in a series of shootings on Interstates 70 and 670 that left one person dead and several others injured.

The body was found in the same home where an hours-long standoff and fire took place last week. Family members discovered the remains when they returned to the property to clean up after the blaze, detecting an odor coming from the basement.

"The deceased was wearing clothing consistent with that of the shooter," authorities stated. The basement was described as heavily congested with debris, filled with feet of water, and cluttered extensively—conditions that police said prevented the body from being located earlier during multiple searches by investigators, K-9 units, and fire crews.

No weapons were found at the home. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

All individuals injured in the shootings are expected to recover.
