Man uses swimming to manage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy after diagnosis

"After initially stopping all exercise due to fear of heart attack, he found swimming helped him maintain a safe heart rate and manage weight."

Dan Williams, 54, was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in 2011 after a family notification. The condition, which thickens the heart muscle, required him to change his exercise habits and undergo treatment.

In June 2025, to mark the 15th anniversary of his diagnosis, he swam 3,000 lengths of a 25-meter pool (75 km) over 30 days. He is fundraising for Craig's Heartstrong Foundation and Isle Listen.
